Hockey Helmet Ratings

As hockey parents, we expect all the equipment that is on the market is safe. But research from Virginia Tech is showing that when it comes to the safety of hockey helmets, some are much safer than others. A decade ago, Virginia Tech looked at football helmets and their research prompted football manufacturers to make changes so that now, all football helmets have a 5-star rating. Virginia Tech hopes to get the manufacturers of hockey helmets to also make changes to reduce the risk of concussion as much as possible.

Below is a listing of the 32 helmets that were ranked, and their suggested retail price in Canadian dollars, with links to where you can buy them online at Canadian TireHockey ExpertsSportChek, or The Hockey Shop. Several helmets don’t seem to be available for sale in Canada (at least I couldn’t find them) and several other helmets that are available for sale in Canada were not rated.

Virginia Tech acknowledges that the helmet manufacturers are adhering to the minimum safety requirements specified by standards organizations and perhaps because of that, there is a great difference in how well the helmets protect a head. To see their methodology in their rankings, you can download the .pdf here.

No helmets were given 5 stars (Best Available) , or 4 stars (Very Good) and only one helmet was given 3 stars (Good) and 6 helmets were given 2 stars (Adequate) and 15 were ranked with 1 star (Adequate). Nine of the helmets tested received a “Not Recommended” rating.

In researching the helmets, I was surprised at some enormous price discrepancies between the US pricing on the Virginia Tech site, and the Canadian pricing — some helmets costing as much as $50 more. You can see the original report (with US pricing) here.

  1. This is crazy ! No 5-star, no 4-star, one 3-star.
Now you know why hockey is not that popular in Europe.

    • I beg to differ! The 2014-15 roster of the Vancouver Canucks has its good share of Europeans, including players from Italy, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Czech Republic and Latvia – that’s just off the top of my head. What Virginia Tech wants to do is help manufacturers find ways of making their equipment more protective, for fewer concussions. They helped the NFL achieve that for football: looks like hockey is next.
